Peppermint Milkshake with Candy Canes
With Optional Hidden “Veggies”
Oh my I love a Peppermint Milkshake and with this delicious milkshake we’ve added crushed candy canes to the rim of the glass for a festive touch. What’s this about hidden veggies though? Well in case you’ve got a vegetable challenged family member aka usually kids we’re sharing a way to sneak in some “veggies” and what they don’t know will definitely not hurt them.
Hidden Veggies, Say What?!
Yes! Here’s your opportunity if you have a picky eater, we used to do this with our daughter when she was younger. We would add a veggie powder supplement to milkshakes and smoothies. The peppermint milkshakes we had to do mint chocolate chip to cover for the green color or the veggie powder. You of course don’t have to add the veggie powder but it’s an option to try for your picky eaters.
THE CANDY CANE RIM
The candy cane rim is what makes this treat extra special and not only is it pretty to look at, but the combination of the candy canes with the mint chocolate chip ice cream is divine.
Adding the crushed candy-canes to the glass is also just a fun and festive option. You will melt some chocolate chips and dip the rim of the glass in the chocolate and then the crushed candy canes. You can of course just leave it as dipped chocolate or use some other kind of candy if you like.

Let’s get to this easy peasy Peppermint Milkshake (with or without hidden veggies) recipe shall we?
- Candy canes (2-3 crushed)*
- 4 tbsp chocolate chips, melted **
- 4 cups of ice cream (chocolate mint)
- 2 cups of milk
- Green food colouring (as needed) OR if you want to hide some veggies – green powder
- Whipping cream
- Melt chocolate chips and then take the glass and dip it in the chocolate.
- Take glass and quickly dip into the candy canes.
- Let set for 10 minutes.
- Prep milkshake by mixing ice cream, milk and a couple of drops of food colouring.
- Blend in blender until smooth.
Pour into glasses and garnish with whipping cream and remaining candy canes.
Some mint chocolate chip ice creams are coloured green and some aren't. You don't have to colour it green it's entirely up to you. If you're adding veggie powder you might want to tell your picky eater it's because it's mint lol.
* For any other time of the year you can substitute the candy canes for other mint candies if you wish.
**You can use any flavour of chocolate you want, white, dark, milk etc..
There you have it, who is ready for a festive peppermint milkshake? I’m raising my hand does that count? It’s a yummy treat, we’ve had it for dessert because let’s face it even with the hidden veggies this peppermint milkshake with a candy cane rim is still very dessert like.
Mint chocolate chip ice cream growing up was always one of my favourite flavours of ice cream and I admit it still is today, oh yum.
Here’s a few alternatives that you can do that are just as yummy:
You can use any flavour of chocolate you want for the rim so milk, white chocolate (very decadent and rich), dark chocolate and you get the idea. No candy canes, that’s okay you can substitute for other minty candies. You can also do any of the following:
- sprinkles for different colourful looks
- chocolate shavings
I’m sure there are more alternatives to try but those should get you started. If you try this peppermint milkshake with or without the hidden veggies let us know how you like it.
