Have Fun With Science This Holiday & All Year Long

I love science and I try to get my children to have a natural zest for it as well.  We have long talks about how things happen in the world around us.  If there is an interesting insect or bird in view we stop to observe it and then we may look it up online to learn even more.  Because of my draw to science I am always on the look out for great things for the kids to further their understanding of the vast world around us.  Learning can be fun, and the scientific world is a great place to mix the two together.  I was able to sharpen my children's minds with knowledge on microbes, and all these tiny things can do in our world with some great STEM kits.Bioglow, Muddwatt, doughlab

Magical Microbes

There are microbes all around us in everything.  We cannot see them but they play a vital role in life as we know it.  Magical Microbes brings these tiny creatures front and center with three STEM kits that will help my kids to understand the microbes' role.  Plus they will learn great facts in a hands-on way.doughlab, magical microbes

DoughLab

This cool DoughLab kit was a great activity to do with my daughter.  We made three loaves of bread in the kitchen and learned all about the power of yeast.  The instruction book was full of fun facts and the whole kit was set up like a science experiment.  This is a great supplement for science fair projects.  She learned about yeast and how it makes the bread we eat the way it is.doughlab, bread, yeastWe made three loaves of bread: one with yeast and salt, one with yeast, salt, and sugar, and one with just salt.  Then we put gloves over the containers to see which had the most gas released from the yeast.  How cool it was to visibly see how well the yeast was doing!  Plus we knew when to bake the bread because the gloves were full.yeasty bread, glovesWe were able to read about bread making in history and see first hand how yeast makes bread yummy!  Plus the booklet has other cool experiments to try out to further your understanding of yeast and its powers.  The bread was delicious and went very well with our pasta dinner that night.  With the exception of the yeast-less loaf, no one liked that one.   We even have leftover yeast and flour to make more bread.  Plus we now have the benefit of learning a new skill.breads, baked MudWatt

We also have a Magical Microbes MudWatt to explore the microbes that live in our dirt.  Here we took some soil, the darkest and smelliest we could find and built a little energy canister.  The book told great facts about microbes and what they do in the dirt and how they can even survive without oxygen.  It was neat for my kids to learn about the things in the soil that help decompose and contribute to the earth.MudWatt componentsThis kit made my kids aware that microbes found in our own yard can produce energy.  It also got them on the track to think of the uses the world could have for this type of energy, and gave examples.  Then you can download a free MudWatt Explorer App to go with your MudWatt for further experiments and fun science.MudWatt, containerThis kit sure beats an ant farm for unique pets that can do cool things.  Most noteworthy is the kids are able to see the energy created from these dirt critters when the LED light turns on, and you can also hook up a little clock to the MudWatt.  This kit was a great tool for teaching simple circuits to my children and seeing the circuit in action.MudWatt, LED

BioGlo

This BioGlo kit is my favorite and I have it in my bedroom.  Inside an hourglass-shaped container, I have pet dinoflagellates (dinos).  These dinos possess one of nature's most beautiful phenomena-bioluminescence.  I have always been drawn to creatures that could do this, and my kids and I studied many animals throughout their home school sciences that had this ability.  Yet here I can actually show them in living color right in front of their eyes! When you get this kit it comes with a code to order your Dinos.  Then they are rushed to your door and you can set up your aquarium.  First, you add the Dinos, then mix up the provided salt and nutrient packs.  Pour the water in over your Dinos until the bottom of the hourglass is ¾ full.  Then you just close it off and let your Dinos recover from their trip.  Place them in an area where they get sunlight, but not direct.  Then in a few days in complete darkness, you can play with your BioGlo.BioGlo, aquariumWhen you see things up close they make a much bigger impact on you and make a lasting impression.  Hundreds of dinos are in my BioGlo aquarium and they take energy from the sun and make a beautiful light show of mysterious blue glows at night when shaken.  I love to enrich my children's minds and Magical Microbes has enabled me to do that with their amazing kits.  Both the BioGlo kit and the MudWatt take time to get the colony of microbes established.  Check back soon for updated pictures on how my microbes are doing soon.

I am sure this holiday season you have many young explorers on your list that would greatly benefit from one of these awesome STEM kits from Magical Microbes.  Help them live and learn about the amazing microbes that are all around!

  4. While I like all the experiments and think they all look very well thought out and professionally done, I particularly like the practicality of the yeast and bread making tests. Because it is so tactile it is something that will be remembered and very useful in an interest in future baking together.

  5. I haven't seen these types of kits before. I think these would be great for my homeschoolers! I know my girls would enjoy learning and exploring with something like this. I can't wait to see updated photos of how the microbes are changing.
