About City Bonfires
As you can imagine, Covid-19 has impacted many industries across the globe. Maryland natives, Chris McCasland, a sports and concert industry broker and restaurateur, and Michael Opalski, a senior restaurant industry salesman, both endured a loss of income during the pandemic.
Each City Bonfire is handmade in Maryland with American-made materials by two Dads whose jobs were impacted by Covid-19. City Bonfires, is a portable, reusable mini bonfire that you can take on all of your outdoor adventures and is a 4 inch by 2 inch round metal tin that is filled with non-toxic soy wax. Unlike other soy wax-based products, City Bonfires entire surface becomes the flame – creating a mobile heat source – a mini bonfire!

One thing I want to be very clear on is that City Bonfires are for OUTDOOR use only and are not to be used as a candle. It is a mini firepit/bonfire which makes sense right? I was so intrigued by these when I saw ads popping up for them. I love that it was created by two dads who turned a difficult time into a business.
The first time we used our City Bonfires was camping at a local lake which is where we took these photos. The kids camping with us loved the City Bonfires or it could have been that they liked the marshmallows they got to roast the the subsequent s’mores that resulted from that. Either way they were a hit.

Remember that the City Bonfires are filled with FDA approved non-toxic food grade soy wax so yes it’s safe to “cook” food over it in this case marshmallows. One thing we noticed that with the marshmallows that sometimes when roasting them over the City Bonfires it made them a grey shade. We weren’t worried about consuming since the soy wax is 100% non-toxic and FDA Food Grade but we asked the folks at City Bonfires and here’s what they said:
Soy wax at certain temps can cause the marshmallow to turn grey but it is only an aesthetic difference and is safe to consume marshmallows that have been roasted over our City Bonfire. It is 100% non-toxic FDA food grade soy wax and 100% biodegradable plant-based briquettes in a 100% recyclable steel tin.
We ask that you let the City Bonfires burn for 20 minutes so it gets hot enough to roast. We recommend roasting to the side of the fire it you want it to be golden brown. Thanks for the explanation City Bonfires and I didn’t realize the briquettes were 100% biodegradable and plant based and the tin is 100% recyclable, how cool!
We also received some S’mores kits from them and those marshmallows in their kits are HUGE, I haven’t seen ones that big in my local grocery store. The S’mores kits also included the skewers to put the marshmallows on while roasting so easy peasy.
I also feel it’s safer for kids to roast marshmallows for example over the City Bonfires instead of around a big bonfire. I’m sure we’ve all had those moments telling the kids not to get too close to the fire or they’ll get burned. The City Bonfires are small so more contained, as always though we have to practice safety around fires. We think these are a great addition to anyone’s summer fun!
