We LOVE this time of the year where it's even easier to enjoy our backyard bbqs! We like to hang out in our backyard when the weather is nice and having some yummy food makes it all the better. I love any excuse to go outside and enjoy the weather and we're lucky where we live we have a forest around us so we get to enjoy nature while in our own backyard.

Our chicken fajita foil packets have seasoned chicken breasts, bell peppers, black beans and onion all cooked together to create a delicious, flavourful meal. The chicken breasts come out tender and moist, no dry chicken here!

We also love these chicken fajita foil packets because once it’s ready you can add your favourite fajita toppings like sliced avocado, sour cream, salsa, lime wedges and cilantro. You can also  have them with or without tortillas or on top of rice.

How do you make chicken fajita foil packets?

I decided not to slice the chicken in advance as I felt it was better to cook the chicken breasts whole which helps to keep the chicken tender and moist.

The chicken breasts are first brushed with lime juice and then seasoned with our DIY fajita seasoning (make sure to keep some seasoning aside). Set aside while you slice your preferred veggies. We did sliced bell peppers (we used 3 colours), black beans and onions.

These Chicken Fajitas Foil Packets can have everything that you love about traditional chicken fajitas but with less mess and fuss and all the yummy flavour!

Place the sliced veggies, black beans into the foil. We used a foil and placed it into a foil pan as it makes it so much easier after it's cooked. There will be a lot of liquid in the foil packet once it's cooked so the foil pan keeps things less messy and then there's no liquid dripping into the grill.

Drizzle olive oil onto of the veggies, just lightly coat and then sprinkle a bit of fajita seasoning over the veggies and beans. If you like a stronger flavour add more fajita seasoning to the veggies and beans. Place the chicken on top of the vegetables and beans. Drizzle a bit of olive oil on top of the chicken.

Seal the foil packet while it's placed in the foil tin and you're ready to put it on the grill or in the oven. I did not have to turn over the foil packet, the chicken was cooked through.

Individual Chicken Fajita Foil Packets

Another fun option that is just a bit more work is you can make individual chicken fajita foil packets. So instead of placing all four chicken breasts into one foil packet, separate them into individual foil packets with their own veggies. This is a great option when not everyone likes the same veggies.

Chicken Fajita Foil Packets

These Chicken Fajitas Foil Packets can have everything that you love about traditional chicken fajitas but with less mess and fuss and all the yummy flavour!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Additional Time 10 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes


  • 1 tablespoon & 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ cup lime juice
  • 1-2 limes
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 cups sliced bell peppers any colour
  • 1 can black beans drained and rinsed
  • ½ cup sliced onion
  • 4 tablespoon chopped cilantro (optional)
  • Toppings for serving such as sour cream, avocado, salsa, squeeze more lime juice and shredded cheese


  1. In a small bowl mix together the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Set aside about 1 teaspoon of the seasoning mixture
  2. Preheat the grill to medium heat (or if cooking in the oven preheat oven to 400 degrees F)
  3. Brush the lime juice all over the chicken breasts on both sides. Coat the chicken breasts with the fajita seasoning mix. I used a silicone pastry brush but you can sprinkle it or lightly dip the chicken in the mix.
  4. Arrange the sliced bell peppers, onion and beans in the foil and place in the foil tray. Sprinkle the 1tsp of fajita
    season over the vegetables and beans.
  5. Lightly drizzle some olive oil on the beans and veggie mix.
  6. Sprinkle chopped cilantro on top of the veggies and beans (optional), save some to sprinkle on the chicken.
  7. Place the seasoned chicken breasts on top of the veggies and beans. Sprinkle more chopped cilantro on top of the chicken breasts.
  8. Fold the foil around the chicken mixture to close completely.
  9. Grill until the chicken is cooked through (internal temp of 165 ºF) and the vegetables are tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before opening the packets. (if using the oven bake the foil packets for 30-45 minutes).
  10. Carefully open the foil packets (watch for the steam coming out). I squeezed more lime juice onto the chicken and veggies at this point but that's optional. I just like the lime flavour.
  11. Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and add fajita toppings such as salsa, sour cream, shredded cheese (we didn’t have
    cheese with ours) and avocado. Slice the chicken and serve. Can be served with tortillas or rice or can be eaten as is.


*Cooking times may vary depending on the size of the chicken breasts and every grill and oven vary on their heat. You can check your chicken with a meat thermometer to see if it's nearing 165 ºF.

As mentioned I squeezed more lime juice onto the cooked chicken and vegetables. This is a personal preference.

Please note everyone's tastebuds are different. You may not like as much seasoning on the chicken as we do or you may want more. This is just what we did and liked. The end result was flavourful with a very mild spicy flavour. I personally like it spicier but my family can't handle spicier so I add some jalepenos to my serving.

Can you substitute chicken thighs for the chicken breasts? Absolutely but this will affect the cooking time and you may want more than 4 chicken thighs.

We kept the chicken breasts whole instead of slicing them before cooking as it keeps the chicken tender and moist.

Try individual foil packets so everyone can add their own favourite veggies.

We did not eat one full chicken breast in one serving. If you have it with rice or tortillas you may find it too filling to eat the entire chicken breast or not.

It may look like there are several steps but they are quick steps and it's very quick to put these chicken fajita foil packets together. It really was only about 10 minutes prep time and for us 25 minutes to cook the foil packet.

I personally ate my fajita chicken just like it's picture below. I didn't need rice or tortillas, it was yummy just like it was with some avocado and sour cream. Plus I avoided the additional carbs from rice and the tortillas which I need to do sometimes lol

  1. This sounds so good, and super easy as well! I love foil packet meals, they taste so good on the grill! This is definitely going to be something I make soon, I am always looking for new chicken recipes.

  2. Many many years ago I learned in girl scouts how to wrap in foil and cook it in the fire. What I like that there was no pan to wash. Have fixed many things like this over the years. But this chicken fajita I have never had and will be making it.

  3. Such a great way to keep the chicken moist. It looks fairly easy too so great for all those of us who are not skilled.

  4. I loved reading all of the recipes. I never knew there were so many different ways to make chicken. I'm really interested in the traditional chicken fajitas and how to prepare them with less mess but tons of yummy flavors.
